Thank you so much!!!
Hi Sofie,
You are welcome!
Have a great day.
I do understand what you mean by the 3rd loop only (behind the stitch). It is probably something very simple but I can’t figure it out.
Hi, Lori ~ There’s a video above.
I was confused on the first time around, but if you can get thru that first row it will be a breeze. I love it!!!
Thanks for the feedback, Kim!
You’re welcome!
For hdc in 3rd loop: exactly what does “insert your hook in the loop behind the back loop,” mean? any photos to illustrate?
i’ve read the instructions several times, can’t comprehend what the directions mean.
Hi, Karen ~ There’s a video above.
Finished a Cleveland Cavs hat last night. Wish I could post pic. Thank you for easy pattern!
That’s great, Kristen! My pleasure.
Love your patterns! I want to make them in child size, age 9-12, can you tell me how many stitches?
Yes love this pattern. I would like to make in children size too. How many stitches? Thank so much.
Hello, Harriett ~ You’ll need to use the gauge provided to determine how many stitches and rows you’ll need for the size you need. Thanks! Hope this helps!
Working on my 3 hat. Love this pattern. Just one question, can this be made into a regular closed on top hat? Love the pattern. Thanks so much. Harriett
Yes, Harriett! My hats are very roomy at the top. You could add a couple of rows to the body of the hat and follow how I closed my Back n Forth messy bun hat here – http://simplycollectiblecrochet.com/2016/12/back-n-forth-messy-bun-hat-crochet-pattern-beanie-2-1/
Lovely Hat, it’s super simple to make and it looks fancy, texture wise for the work put into it.
I made this up for my oldest daughter and realized that it will be a tad small for her adult head. this is my second hat, and my first was made at least 8 years ago. So I kept up with it as it will fit my youngest daughter. It whipped up in just a few hours, literally. I was so pleased!!! Now I’ll be making another larger for my oldest daughter, who has a large head to start with…. but also three more for my youngest daughters best friends for Christmas. They love to go ice skating at our local rink when they have open skate and thinks they will look fabulous on the ice. well I think my daughter is trying to direct the looks to her new fabulous hat, rather than her poor skating skills….. LOL
Oh my goodness, Kristie ~ That is so funny about her trying new looks. LOL!
Thank you so much for your kind words about my hat! I’m so glad it works out for you all.
In rows 16-18 I’m having trouble figuring out where to slip stitch. Could you help me with this? Thank you
Hi, Connie ~ slip stitch to the top of the chain to join.
Is this an adult size pattern? I have begun this piece and it seems small is it is more an adult pattern how could I modify to make it bigger
Hello, Rebecca ~ Check the size of the finished hat, measure your person’s head, and test your gauge against mine to see if you are also to use a K-hook. Then you can modify accordingly. It’s possible your tension is quite a bit tighter than mine and/or you are not using Vanna’s Choice. 🙂 You’ll get it!
Hi Billie,
Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice, worsted weight, 3.5 oz/170 yds – Silver Blue and K/10 1/2 – 6.50mm is used for this pattern.
Thank you for visiting our site.
Do you have a patter like the light blue one but is the complete hat without the hole? Thanks
Hi, Terry ~ I’m going to finish one as a full beanie sometime and write it down fairly soon! Please subscribe in the the case I don’t get to it right away.
Ok thanks
Any left handed video tutorials for the messy bun hat? Thanks and love your website!
Not at this time, Valerie. Thank you so much for coming by!
I’m left hand so tutorials don’t help me much but found if you look in a mirror, it takes awhile to get this trick down, it will make sense. I hope this trick helps you my Mom was a lefty also and taught me this.
I just made your hat and am pretty proud of my first attempt! I do have one quick question. When I did the last four rows. the pretty trim went to the inside. Am I supposed to turn the hat inside out to use? Please don’t laugh as I am laughing at myself! 🙂
Perhaps you used the 3rd loop on the wrong side OR accidentally flipped your hat. Now it’s your turn not to laugh- although I’m not laughing at you. 😉 – I actually started turning my hat right side in so I could get to the 3rd loop easier and one time I forgot to flip it back and I got really confused. lol. It was very late.
Thanks for the reply! I will flip it before doing the last rows. Finding the third loop was easy but was surprised it was on the inside. Will make another one today to see how the flip works. However, with the first hat and the textured rows on the inside, the outside looks pretty classy. Is there a way to make the hole bigger and use the same pattern? Thanks!
Cool! I think you blew my mind with that question. ha! Make the top opening larger? Maybe skip straight to the increase row of 48 stitches. So, use the same instruction but 48 stitches as opposed to 24 stitches. 😉
Oh boy! Be sure to test your gauge against mine.
Hi, Breanna ~ The yardage is in the pattern. It’s under one skein for me.
This is funny because I am on round…6 and it’s heading toward that ‘newborn baby’ look, too.
Hahaha – That’s a funny way to read it. Check your gauge. Check your gauge. Check your gauge. Use the same materials and check your gauge or you will definitely have to modify.
Hello. I want to make myself such a hat but I wear a lower ponytail as my hair is not super long. Any suggestions on how to adapt this for a lower hole? Thank you for sharing your pattern. 🙂
Not at this time, Kate. That’s a new pattern. Thanks for coming by!
Hi, Carol ~ Yes, Ma’am. Those are the hook specs. Hope that helps!
Awesome pattern! Is permission granted to sell finished items?
Thank you! Yes, Ma’am.
Thanks so much! Merry Christmas! 🙂
You’re welcome Sarah! Merry Christmas to you as well!
Need help with row four,please
Hi Phyllis,
Can you please send us a picture of where you are at this point? Also, if you could give more detail on where you are stuck that would be great.
Happy Holidays!
My first messy bun hat and I’m glad i chose this pattern.. It is RIGHT ON, everything is perfect about this pattern, the size, the fit, the stretchy fit, the length, the look, the feel, I could go on and on and on… If I could figure out how to do the top I would make myself several of these, as I have short hair, no need for a messy bun, but the kids and grands are screaming for them. You are one awesome designer. Merry Christmas and thank you very much for sharing this pattern.
Hi, Cindy! Thank you so much for your feedback and those kind words. You could add two more rows and then cinch it together by using your tail and a darning-needle. Pick up the back loop only, or the front loop only, of each stitch around and then pull it closed and weaving your end. It should be perfect! I tried it out and I’ve been meaning to make a video. As soon as I find the time, it will be up.
Hello and so glad to find you and this wonderful pattern!! I am a seasoned crochet-er 60 years!! When I say that, it doesn’t seem real! My Granma taught me to make a chain at about 6 yo. After I circled my house a few times, she agreed to teach me another stitch!! HAHA… I need to make this for my 16 year old granddaughter tonight and can give at “MeMaw’s” Christmas party in a few days… If you need a leftie, just let me know.
Happy Holidays, Pat
So sweet, Pat! Thank you so much for coming by, giving your feedback, and sharing an important part of your history. Perhaps your granddaughter will be making some of her own one day. For now, she is very blessed to have you making them for her.
Hi, Alice! R15 is both loops and R16 starts the 3rd loop. I’ve embedded a video to help you locate it and here is the direct url – https://www.youtube.com/embed/Pdw7_q3HIY0
I hope this helps!
YES! Glad you got it! That happened to me when I was writing the pattern. It naturally curled itself around with its own weight. So weird, right?
You say to make HDC in the third loop, but looking at the video, it looks like a BPHDC (back post HDC). Is that what you mean? If so, might be better to use the standard crochet terminology that most people are familiar with.
Thanks for sharing this pattern. Making one right now!
Im in South Africa, please explain what worsted weight is?
Hi,
Worsted weight would be Aran for you. It’s a size larger thank DK. Like Elle Charity yarn not Pullskein yarn. Thankfully I have a friend that lives in South Africa and was able to help me answer your question.
Have a wonderful day!
